fifa anyone???

The advent of state of the art technology has finally blessed the bored and wretched souls of NIT Warangal,BH.The reason...we are now officially connected!Im not taking about a meteoric riose in the number of hand held communication devices manufactured by a Finnish company..but rather im talking of the much awaited college lan and internet. While the lan has its great advocates..(to be read counter-strike,AOE and fifa-maniacs) the internet facility has taken quite a beating...and that too with reason.

Have you ever had a bad dream where you enter this huge maze and then can't find a way out cause all the paths lead to a dead end...welcome to the Total Internet Experience (TIE) rought to you by the famed Ece department of NITW.this TIE is regulated by a Solitary Limping Soul (SLS) from the erstwhile mentioned famed department...who is often seen doing the rounds on 14th block ...pouncing upon poor unsuspecting souls who decided that it would be more worthwhile to stay back in their rooms rather than face the flak from their teachers.

This SLS has taken the onus of being our guardian angel upon his drooping shoulders.Of course who could doubt the authority and prowess of this SLS...and as a case in point..SLS was out to block all that his wise intellect told him to."You people watch porn, download and surf on Orkut...thez arrreee de 3 deeedly seeenz" he retorts in class. To point his rather long middle finger straight at you...he comes out with a list of defaulters too...and the unmentionable sites they visit in full purview of the final year students of that famed department. This of course isn't the least obscene.Bottom line as our beloved student council chairman put it...."almost every link is blocked by the firewall....checking your mail is a luxury and downloading attachments a mere dream....!"

Nevertheless....pussilaminious people behave like ...well pussises.....when they are given a free hand with regards to something. Can you beat the fact that Blogger.com is blocked...??!For no reason.(although I can still access it using rund-a-bout techniques he can't trace) The more you prohibit..the more students will work around the system. The maniacal SLS doesn't realize that that we are plain smarter than he is.Hopefully we will be able to do something about the net facility through higher channels....after alll....not all of us are porn freaks and orkut-bugs!

Till then......bing bing!!fifa anyone?

Placements...well

Placement fever has caught on in NIT Warangal..the time of reckoning when an entire lifetime (or so it seems ) of agony in gult-land seems to evaporate and the array of rooms and conference halls below the CAD/CAM labs seem to hold everyone's attention!(Never to disregard the staggering array of fancy cars and sultry HR lasses!)
Very well...placements for me were over in a jiffy..thankfully I didn't have to go through the ordeals of waiting and speculating..and I do consider myself to be fortunate!
Microsoft was here as the very first company for CSE students.Needless to say, they were very very impressive in thier PPT.The panel was awe-inspiring to say the least..indeed there is something special about people who ply their trade in the largest and wealthiest software company in the world.
After over 4 hours of testing and three-four rounds of interviews (each of which had its own zing and flavor!) a long day came to an end.The results were decided but we had to agonizingly wait of another day for the results. That was one night I won't forget. What amazed me was that inspite of haveing had a gruelling 15 hour journey throught to the final round and never having been more drained in quite some time,I couldn't get a wink of sleep.
Nevertheless, the ensuing nigt the results were out. What was even more gratifying was that Shailesh and Deepak had made it too although Vibhu and Dina were terribly unlucky not to make it.Well...placements for me are over...and now now its time top sit back and watch the drama unfold! I wish all my batchmates the very best of luck an hope that all are well placed and that too as soon as possible!
Cheers!

The Namesake

Generally afer getting home from work,I find it relaxing to unwind with a movie.Of course ,the unavailability of a television set might have something to do with that.Anyways..on one of my week-end jaunts which happened to lead to marathalli(i hope thats wat its called)I picked up a dvd of Mira Nair's cinematic rendition of Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake..apart from a pair of really cheap flying machines. The Namesake is a movie I really wanted to watch on the big screen but thanks to the hectic few days I got to spend in Calcutta..that didn't quite work out.I had to,unwillingly, pin my hopes on a flimsy pirated camera-print bearing video disc. And I wasn't disappointed at all with what it had to offer...
I guess I will have to pen down a few words about the movie itself. The Namesake is a brilliant example of how a discerning director,a flamboyant script-writer and some sensitive acting can bring alive an authors's words penned on paper..The central character of the movie is of course played by Kal Penn as the intriguing but strikingly natural Nikhil 'Gogol' Ganguly.Of course his parents Asheema and Ashok also play a pivotal role in the development of the plot.Tabu, playing the role of Asheema, overwhelms us with her adroit acting as she slips in as comfortably into the garb of a young bride in Calcutta to a woman struggling to come to terms with a foreign environ in the US of A to an understanding mother and a woman who is shattered by the loss of the person she has learnt to love over several years.
Irffan Khan has been notably in his role of the quintessential professor Ganguly. As a young student,he had a near death experience on the railtracks where he was rescued clutching the pages of The Overcoat by Nikolai Gogol.Aroused by the ramblings of a co-passenger Mr.Ghosh on that fateful day,Ashok decided to travel the world and ended up with a Phd and the livelihood of a university professor.
Ashok and Asheema decided to nickname ther child Gogol (his good name was of course Nikhil)and there started the saga of the Namesake.Gogol was the name which caught on.Its quite remarkable as to how Kal Penn(originally a Gujju Kalpen Modi) frets about having a name as strange as Gogol..be it in the high school Literature class where the teacher brings to light the idiosyncracies of the "slightly eccentric" Russian author(our gogol being his namesake) to the part in Gogol's seduction of his sweetheart where she has to say his name!Frustrated by constant mockery..he decidesto change his name to Nikhil "Nick" Ganguli.Of course..I could ramble on forever about the rest of the story..but let me talk about the three facets of the story which left me thinking...
One was the scenes of Calcutta...I havnt been home for a while now and whenever I see scenes of the City of Joy..ifail to control my emotions. There have been so many movies that have captured the beauty of this great city...The Namesake has once againg don justice. The beautiful shots of Howran bridge, the railway station,Hoogly river and the singing boatswaine, the imposing Victoria Memorial, schenes of a typical North Calcutta household ,Sarawsati pujo..the household handyman chasing Gogol as he runs through the crowded streets...thy all fill me with a feeling I cannot express in words. The movie keeps sifting dramatically through cities of Calcutta and Boston..the very two cities where Gogol has his roots embedded...
Secondly,Ashok Ganguli...when he reveals the secret of his son's name, takes Gogol's relationship with his father to a newer level...Everyday since has been a gift..says Ashok..and one can see how dearly the father loves his son...
Lastly of course...Gogol's rites of passage...where he evolves from being a young man seeking his identity..to a mature individual who realizes how the world around him ticks through several experiences ..some sweet..some bitter...no more bitter than his father's sudden death. The movie also brings to light several family values..brillinatly portrayed for exmaple by tabu's restlessness when her son doesn't call her back as he said he would...to her anguish when she looses her husband.
Taking a deep breath and looing back at about 2 hours of cimenascope..its a movie I would certainly recommend..Kal Penn too has evolved dramatically in his role of Gogol Ganguli..Some people claimed that the movie was slow..but that would not be a fair evaluation since a movie which intertwines so many emotions and shades of life cannot be expected to go at a 'Pirates of the Carribbean' pace for example! Its definitly worht a watch...just as Jhumpa Lahiri's book is worth a read!

Purple haze all around
Dont know if Im comin up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
What ever it is, that girl put a spell on me
Help me

Is it tomorrow, or just the end of time?

Newbies!

The excitement is exhilerating...
United have amde it as far as Nani, Anderson and Heargreaves is concerned...
Finally some flair signings and I find it hard to hold back till next season...
With a whif of portuguese sea-breezy winger nani...some typical brazilian samba from Anderson and some stoic stymie from Owen Hargreaves....and thats not all...there are a few more big signings to come notably of a striker with the possible departure of Louis Saha..berbatov?viduka?..the alleged departure of richardson, heinze, saha and the unsuccessful chase of Gareth Bale are disappointing but that is completely overshadowed by the arrival of these amazing talents to grace Old Trafford's Theatre of Dreams...glory ...glory...
